Sarah and Josie have managed to break lots of covalent and ionic bonds to allow lead oxide, zinc oxide and boric acid melt and form a glass.

First we take the clay and get creative.

All art is chemistry that looks good

Bonding describes the forces that hold atoms to other atoms in elements or molecules. Bonding also describes the forces that attract molecules to other molecules in molecular compounds or ions to each other in ionic compounds.

Where do forces originate anyway. Let Brian Cox explain.

Physicist Brian Cox has two jobs: working with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and explaining big science to the general public.

Now read pagers 79-82 in the Wignall and Wales text book. Try exercise 9A then 9B

You are not just chemistry students. You are actually training to become an architect or designer…………..at the molecular level. You are allowed to feel superior in most respects to unfortunates who have made poor course choices. Now do the tutorial.

The first week is out of the road and we get down to the serious and not so serious study of chemistry. I hope you enjoy the course and achieve the  qualifications you need to progress to the next level.

Last year’s sixth form set a new benchmark for success and I am sure you can  go on and better it. Don’t spend lots of time trying to sort out the difficult stuff yourself, get help sooner rather than later. That is what I am here for.

The inaugural chemistry “oscars” were held last year (winners pictured in the header) and you will have opportunities to join the illustrious roll of honour.

good luck with your studies.
